Semaglutide is a prescription medication that is used to manage chronic weight in adults who are obese or overweight with at least one weight-related condition. Well known drugs in this category are Ozempic and Wegovy and Rybelsus which are approved U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Semaglutide, the active pharmaceutical ingredient, is not FDA-approved for use as a compounded drug. Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, which works by mimicking the effects of a natural hormone called GLP-1 in the body. The medication is administered through a subcutaneous injection once a week, and it works by reducing appetite, increasing feelings of fullness, and slowing down the digestion rate of food to reduce calorie intake and promote weight loss. Clinical trials have shown significant weight loss in patients treated with Semaglutide compared to those treated with a placebo.
